SIM-only plans, where you keep your phone and just pay for the service, are usually the cheapest way to run a mobile in Ireland. Prices and promotions change every few weeks, so instead of a price table that goes stale, here's a method that finds the cheapest plan for you, plus your switching rights from ComReg.

1. Work out what you actually use

Check your phone's data usage over the last few months (Settings > Mobile data on iPhone, or Settings > Network & internet on Android). Many people on "unlimited" plans use far less than they pay for. If you're mostly on home Wi-Fi, a smaller allowance could save money.

2. Compare like with like

3. Roaming: EU and the UK

Under EU "roam like at home" rules, calls, texts and data in other EU countries are charged at your Irish domestic rates, though operators can apply a fair use data limit on cheap or unlimited plans and must tell you what it is (Your Europe: roaming). The UK, including Northern Ireland, is outside the EU, so EU roaming rules don't cover it. Many Irish plans include UK roaming anyway, but check if you cross the border often.

4. Switch without a gap

ComReg says you can keep your number for free; tell your new provider, because it isn't automatic. You can agree a switch date with the new provider, and if problems arise you shouldn't be without service for more than one working day. Providers must compensate you for switching problems such as loss of service or delays. Your old contract ends when the new service begins, so there's no double billing, but check your old contract for early termination charges (ComReg: switch mobile provider).

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my number if I switch mobile network in Ireland?

Yes, free of charge. Ask your new provider to port it, because it isn't done automatically.

Is roaming free in the UK on an Irish plan?

EU roaming rules don't cover the UK, including Northern Ireland. Many Irish operators include UK roaming, but check your plan's terms.

Do I need unlimited data?

Check your actual usage first. If you mostly use Wi-Fi, a smaller data allowance could cost less.
