There's no score to "boost" in Ireland: lenders look at your Central Credit Register report and their own assessment of your finances. Improving your credit history means correcting errors, explaining genuine problems and building a record of on-time repayments. Here's how.
General information, not financial advice. We're not regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland and don't recommend specific financial products. Rates, prices and rules change, so check the provider and the official sources linked on each page.
1. Get your report and check it
Start with your free report from the Central Credit Register (see how to check your credit report for free). Compare each loan against your own statements.
2. Ask for wrong information to be corrected
If information is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date, you can request an amendment through the CCR borrower area. The CCR says it will respond within 20 days with an update or a decision, and requests must be answered within a maximum of 40 days. You can also ask your lender directly for the underlying documents about your loan.
3. Add an explanatory statement
If the information is correct but there's context, such as illness, job loss or an agreed payment break, you can add an explanatory statement of 200 words or less. Lenders, you, and anyone you give consent to will see it when the report is checked.
4. Suspect someone is using your identity?
You can place a notice of suspected impersonation on your report. It stays for 90 days. Also contact the lender involved and the GardaĆ.
5. Build a clean record from now on
- Pay on time, every time. Missed payments show on your report, and lenders see detailed payment history for the last two years.
- Set up direct debits for at least the minimum payment on every loan and card.
- Talk to your lender early if you're going to struggle. An agreed arrangement is better than unexplained arrears.
- Don't apply for lots of credit at once. Every application leaves a footprint that other lenders can see.
- Be patient. Information stays for five years after a loan is paid off, so old problems fade with time and new good behaviour builds up.
